Changes during production

  • 4.2 litre engine and all-synchromesh gearbox (October 1964) From October 1964 the 3.8 litre XK engine gives way to the 4,235 cc engine (265 bhp, about 18 % more torque), with an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox, improved brakes and seats, an alternator instead of the dynamo and negative earth. The boot carries "E TYPE / JAGUAR / 4.2" lettering.
  • Black vinyl dash and trimmed console (from September 1963) The polished aluminium centre dash ends in September 1963; later cars, all 4.2s included, have black vinyl and a leather-covered console trimmed to match the seats.
  • Open headlamps (early 1967) Glass headlamp covers stay on most cars until early 1967; late Series 1 cars with open headlamps are made from January 1967, and the Series 1½ (August 1967 on) adds rocker switches and twin carburettors. The 3D body has the covered lamps only.
